Primary Performance Standards

By the end of the 8th grade, students will have further developed their abilities in the following areas:

·         Note-taking:  Students will record major concepts and supporting details from class lecture and reading with minimal prompts from the teacher.  Students will regularly practice how to create graphic organizers and Roman numeral notes.

·         Public Speaking: Students will demonstrate comprehension of the subject matter through a prepared oral presentation with visual aids, Socratic seminars, and daily participation.

·         Cause/Effect Sequencing: Students will demonstrate an ability to identify events in a sequence and events that have a cause and effect relationship.  Students will be able to differentiate between the short-term and long-term effects, as well as multiple causes and effects, in identifying historical events.

·         Study Skills: Students will utilize class notes, their prepared binder, textbook, and student-composed notes to prepare study guides from a set list of topics to review for assessments.

·         Geography: Students will label, read, and analyze information on political maps, physical maps, distribution maps, and historical/period maps.  Students will demonstrate an understanding of the effect of geography on regional, cultural, and historical events and the impact of geography on current global issues.

·         Analysis and Synthesis of Data: Students will read and analyze information from charts, timelines, maps, graphs, political cartoons, and text to identify fact from opinion.  Students will interpret the past through primary sources, in addition to present day norms and values, in order to draw knowledgeable conclusions.

·         Writing: Students will exhibit reading comprehension by responding to a prompt or passage in open response format, utilize research materials to write a minimum five page essay related to the subject matter, and begin to design individual thesis statements.

·         Research: Students will utilize classroom materials, the library, and the internet to locate primary and secondary sources related to a research topic.  Students will cite sources properly using parenthetical citation with active teacher guidance and support.
